Arcade Woman: 1920 Woman of the Year - Gave Birth 10-times, has 12 Children! AttaGirl Lena, Good Job Bill!

I vote for this woman in the Arcade Township in 1920 to be the
Mother of the Year.  A dozen children and two sets of twins!
Joseph and Josephine, ages 18 & 18.
Edward and Edmund, ages 15 & 15.

What are the odds of two sets of twins?
But then again, there were ten rolls of the dice.

Author's Note:  I googled the odds and they came up as follows:
"So in theory the odds of having two sets would be 112 multiplied by 112,
which is around
12,500 to one and the odds of having three sets would
be 112 cubed, or
1.4 million to one."

Loyd Oleson - Outgoing President, 1955. Banquet held to honor the Officers.

Check out Loyd's Sideburns!!  First time for me to see!!

Loyd and Maxine at the Jaycee Banquet - Loyd was
outgoing President and his friends no doubt honored
him at the Banquet.  (The new President's Team would also
likely be honored as well.)

Steph points out that the arrow in the foreground points
to Dorothy and Harold Hoshor.  Harold is Tom Long's
half brother.

Steph believes that the Banquet was probably at
Saint Bernards Catholic Church.

Above is the newspaper summary of the banquet
as well as a picture showing Ruby and Vernon
Sjoquist, good friends of the parents and the
family as we knew their children.

No mention of Loyd as 1956 President so he
must have been President in 1955.

Per Steph, she says:

"This was your bedroom in Redfield. The door behind
us is the door you used to get out to the deck and
walk around the outside of the railing, scaring
us half to death!!!!  We also may have a
picture where we dressed up a kitten/cat in
doll clothes. It was taken in that room."

I guess that was the beginning of my
hangliding career.  Standing on the edge
of a drop-off.  Now, if I could get some
attention, that may have been a bonus.

I cannot believe I actually played with
a cat... but then again, you may be
joshing me Steph.

PS  I guess the big chair in front of the
door was to keep me in.

PSS  Pat doesn't look too happy in that
fancy pajama get-up.

Quintin, Elora, Addy, Amaya and Panama - These are Your Oleson Grandfather's...

This is an awesome document to find in another Family's Tree!

This is a 1860 Danish Census Document that verifies the names
of Niel Oleson's Father, Mother, Sisters and Brothers.  It also
gives their ages and where they were born.  Note that
Ole's Mother is also living with them as well as two
man servants.  (I translated all of the Danish descriptors.)

The Danes have added a tremendous amount of confusion to
the naming system.  Why would Niels Oleson have a Father
named Ole Larsen?  The naming system is sort of goofy if
you ask me.  The first name of a boy child can be anything
that the parents want him to be.  However the Last Name
is a combination of the Father's First and Last Name.

Use an example, Niels Brother Peter who did not change
the spelling of his surname when he followed Niels to
America.  Peter - the first name obviously - is what
the parents chose for him.  However his last name of
OLSEN came from his father's first name Ole and
the end of his last name, Larsen.  Therefore, Peter's
name is Peter Olesen... except they dropped the middle
"e".  Not sure why.  At any rate, the girls naming system
is even more complicated.  Check out Google for an
explanation.  Too complicated for this old man.

It is fun to be able to tell my grandkids who
their Oleson Grandfathers are:

Doug Oleson - Born in Redfield in 1951 - Grandfather (GF)
Loyd Oleson - Born in Faulkton in 1924 - Great Grandfather (GGF)
Fred Oleson - Born in Iowa in1883 - GGGF
Niels Oleson - Born in Denmark in 1848 - GGGGF
Ole Larsen - Born in Denmark in1815 - GGGGGF
Lars Jensen Syv - Born in Denmark in 1783 - GGGGGGF
Jens Jensen SYV - Born in Denmark in ? - GGGGGGGF

Rockwell College, Cashell, Tipperary, Ireland --- Home of Catholic Priest Father Johann Muller - Joseph Mueller's Brother

Rockwell College, Cashell, Tipperary, Ireland

Likely around 1915

Cashell, Tipperary, Ireland

Postcard of the College sent to Josephine Mueller Eaton, 19 years old at this time, by Johann Müller, the Music and Language Professors at the Boys College. Josephine's Father was Johann's brother, Joseph Mueller.

World War 1 Conflict

World War 1 - 1915 - 1919 - Germany against Britain, France and the USA

Orient, Faulk, South Dakota, USA

Two Sides to Every War - The German Side: Many of the Müller family were

either required or voluntarily joined the Germany Army. Josie was not yet

married to Orville, but he ended up in France as an ambulance driver,

serving the Allied Powers against Germany. Some in the family wrote to

Josie to ask her to communicate between in sending letters from

Germany to a relative in Ireland. They did not use their real German

names but rather used Nicknames or middle names to avoid being

questioned if the postcards were found suspicious. (Letters were often

opened and many times just thrown away or heavily redacted prior

to being posted by the German Government.)

Several of their cards are shown below, copied out of the Ancestory Site.

My dear niece! About three months ago I sent you a letter with card enclosed to be sent to my brother
John Nepomuk. As I did not receive an answer form you I must presume that the
letter did not reach you. Did you hear from your uncle lately? Would you be kind
enough to send a card which I send you under your address to my brother. It is the
only way I know of. My best regards to your mothers and sisters. Yours affectionately Uncle G. Anastasius Josef Wemding, Bavaria, Germany

My dear niece! Hereby I want to let you know that my nephew - your cousin Julius was wounded
and died in a battle near Apremont. Would you have the kindness to inform Uncle John
Nepomuk of this sad news! Did you hear from him lately? It is an awful
war & alas! no hope yet, that it will soon be ended.
Greetings to your mother and sisters! Your affectionatly Uncle G. Anastasius Josef

My dear niece Josephine! Your card just arrived reminds me of a favor which you could do for me. On
account of the war, we did not hear anything from our brother John Neomuk in
Ireland and your cousins, the children of your aunt Mathilde, feel very uneasy about him.
Though, for my part, do not think that he was in any way molested by the English, I
would like to be sure of it in order to quiet my nieces. Would you now be kind enough
to let me know if you have heard lately from your Uncle Nepomuk - and if not,
would you write him that we would like to know how he is, and also that your cousin
Julius is in the army, while Gustav and Julius Stoekler, the husbands of Elise & Mary
are not yet enrolled. Gustav was dismissed on account of bad health. I did not write
to R.P. J Nepomuk because the letter would not be forwarded to him and also
because of fear that the attention of the English government might be
roused & thus troubles caused.
With the best wishes for your mothers and sisters I remain your affect Uncle G. Anastasius Josef Wemding 16.I.15

Orient - The Town Hub of Many of the Early Eaton/Hern/Mueller Family Members

1910 Map of Orient Township, South Dakota

Take a look at the 1920 Federal Census that is in
the Gallery and you will find many things interesting.
The census taker, Myron E Loomis, recorded three
dwellings in a row in the village of Orient, with
related people living in them.  Of course, unless he
knew everyone in town really well, he would not know
the extent of these relationships since their
surnames do not necessarily give
their family status away.

Dwelling # 12

Sarah Mueller  -  Head of the House  -  Widow  -  53 years

Clara Mueller  -  Daughter  -  19 years old

Florence Mueller  -  Daughter  -  17 years old

Dwelling # 13

August Zellmer  -  Head of the House  -  50 years old

Emma Noon Zellmer  -  Wife  -  50 years old

Oliver Noon  -  Son  -  30 years old

George Noon  -  Son  -  23 years old

Eva Hill  -  Boarder  -  17 years old

Dwelling # 14

Earl A Evans  -  Head of the House  -  29 years old

Lola Noon Evans  -  Wife  -  28 years old

Russel Evans  -  Son  -  5-11/12, almost 6 years old

Elmer Evans  -  Son  -  4-2/12 years old

Edna Evans  -  Daughter  -  2-7/12 years old

Baby Leroy Evans - Son  -  0/12 years

Dwelling or Farm # 12 - Sarah may not be living on the land that she homesteaded.  After Joe died, it was reported that she moved to town.  It is likely that she rented her homestead for other families to live and work.  I am presuming that all three mentioned household families are living in the town of Orient.

When Joe Mueller died in 1903, he made a special effort to will his property to his first wife's daughter: Laura Marie Mueller (but not her mother) changed her name to Miller after the divorce.  (Josie kept up with this half sister and her family - she married Jay C Cleland - also from Orient - even after they moved to Port Huron, Michigan.)  For this reason, perhaps Sarah did not include Laura in the estate settlement after she died.  Unclear to me.

Clara and Florence are still living in the house, perhaps Clara is finishing high school and she marries Charles Tuchek 04 Jan 1920.  Florence marries Leal Buchanon on 13 May of 1921.  Note that the third sister is out of the house, my grandmother: Josephine.  She became a very popular school teacher and married Orville Eaton on 26 Nov 1919 after he came back from his service in WW1.  (He served as an ambulance driver in France.)

Josephine was later charged with disposing of Sarah's estate later in life - they rented the farm out for many years after the death of Sarah before selling.

(It is noted in a document that George Evans came back from San Francisco and asked for his share of the estate after he heard that his mother Sarah had died.  Josie Eaton was in charge of the estate and gave him $1,000 as his share of the estate.  She could not find all of her half brothers, the missing ones had their share of the estate proceeds distributed to their children or next of kin.  As a point of reference, $1000 in 1926 translates to the buying power of $13,772 in 2018.  Assuming that Sarah gave all 8-children equal shares, this would translate to her 160 acres & buildings being worth $8000 then and $110,400 today.  However, I believe that property has appreciated much more than the strict value of the dollar.  Orient farm land today is probably worth north of $400/acre or in this case, over $640,000.)

Dwelling or Farm # 13  -  Elmer Zellmer married a divorced relative of the family: Emma.  She was previously married to a "Noon" - hence the name of the two older sons living - and likely working on the farm.  Emma had her two boys living at the farm as well as a young lady named Eva Hill.  She was a bookeeper at the same business that one of the Noon boys worked at - his occupation was listed as "machinist."  Josephine, sister of Florence and Clara, not living at the farm any longer, must have known Eva well even though she was seven years older.  Josie had her Hillsboro (near Portland, Oregon) home address in her important papers.  I am watching for a picture of them together as Orville and Josie occasionally got out to the Northwest.

Dwelling or Farm # 14  -  Earl H Evans and his wife Lola lived at this farm raising their family.  His mother is Sarah that lives on Farm # 12.  His wife Lola is the daughter of Emma, who is wife of August Zellmer on Farm # 13.  Lola is, of course related to the two Noon boys - they are her older and younger brothers.  The ages of the family children, noted very clearly on the census form, do not correlate with the birth dates presently noted in ancestery.  Therefore, it will be worth checking out.  For the detailed oriented, I have listed the ages in months for further follow-up to see where the discrepancy is:  At the date of the census in 1920, Russel is 71 months old, Elmer 50, Edna 31 and the Baby shown in the census is Leroy George Evans at 0 months old.

Dwelling # 9  -  Another interesting note:  Myron enumerated his own family household.  His census details can be seen on the upper part of the page.  I also note that the Loomis Family has two Eggerling relatives living with them - they are shown as sister-in-laws, apparently his wife's sisters.  I notice this because Caspar Eggerling, perhaps their father, eventually bought Sarah's farm from the Evan's estate.  Might be worth following up the relationships.

Josephine's Half Sister Laura Mueller Dies of the 1918 Pandemic Flu plus Pneumonia

Laura Mueller Cleland - Josephine Mueller Eaton's
half sister died of the 1918 Pandemic Flu with Pneumonia
complications - much like Loyd, only Covid, not flu.

Josie and Laura seemed to have a friendship, although
Laura was 6-7 years older than Josie.  One of the family
letters talked about how her mother, Joe's wife Kate, was
fearful that Joe would take Laura back to Germany -
this was likely the period that they were coming to an
eventual divorce (due reportedly to his drinking issues).

Joe cared for Laura much and as he died at age 51, his
Will left land in Iowa to Laura with definite wording
that her mother would not be party to any of his
estate.  (She was a Chiropracter MD so likely did not
need the estate money.)  Interesting though that at
the time of his death, he had 5 step-sons (the Evan's Boys)
and three daughters (Josie, Florence and Clara) and
a new wife Sarah and he chose to give his Iowa
estate to his first daughter by his first marriage.

Laura and her husband Jay had two daughters, Margaret
and Jean, ages 2 & 4.  Maxine later was in contact with
one of them Elizabeth "Jean" Cleland Waddell.  She
was quite an accomplished China Painter - Maxine
probably had some of her pieces based on their mutual
respect for each other found in their letters.

Jean once told Maxine that Joe had red, curly hair and
quite a temper.  She said that her mother did not talk about
him but her mother's sister would tell her things.  Maxine
told Jean that Josie told her that she could remember him
drawing beautiful pictures at the dining room table and
that he wheezed terribly due to very bad asthma.  To
further make his asthma worse, he was managing a
grain elevator where the air would be full of dust.

I wish that I could find a picture of Joe Mueller.

I would like to and likely will. It is on my bucket list!

The original land grant acreage that Joe Mueller obtained from the Government.

My friend and relative Dan is my "Map Guy." He makes professional
maps whenever I can find a legal description that he can work with.
Today he sent me a map of Joe Mueller's property with a note that
Camp Dakota, less than one mile away was one of his rural landscape
design projects in his other life. (His life before his map life.)

Wow!!
What a small world it is! My friend working the land in 1997
near land that my GGF Joe worked hard to keep under
the Land Grant rules 100 years earlier in 1897.  He said that
he likely walked on Joe's land as he followed all the
river and collection areas nearby before designing the work.

Picture of the Neils Oleson Family House in Morningside, Sioux City, Iowa before Traveling to South Dakota by Covered Wagon

Steph, Tom and Loyd stopped in Sioux City on the
way back to Mitchell from the KC Weiss Wedding
to take this picture. This is Loyd hanging out on the
corner of 7th &Steuben.  According to records, this
was the area that the Oleson house below was located.

Perhaps one of the oldest pictures that we have of the Oleson Family.  We do not have pictures of Niel's Parents - this is a picture of the Father of Niels Wife Marie:  Hans J Sorenson Sr.

This is actually a photo taken of a picture in a frame that Aunt Mae had - not sure what happened to Aunt Mae's original.

Aunt Mae wrote the following description on the picture.  "Mother's father "Grandfather Hansen."  Little girl on Grandfather's left is Elizabeth, the one on his right is Frederica, then next to her
is Susie and then Carrie."

(This copy-of-Aunt-Mae's framed picture was found in a
box of Aunt Susie's things per Lois.)

Fred and Minnie Oleson have Visitors: Oren Mitchell Johnson and Dorothy Hansen

Undiagnosed Celiac's Disease may have played a part in the passing of Fred in 1963. I can remember him eating "milk toast" as we were sitting at the table eating roast beef and mashed potatoes. I do not remember Fred ever walking with a cane but there is one behind his left leg - a second picture (above) with, I think, Oren Mitchell Johnson".

The back of the picture says that the younger woman is Dorothy Hansen,
which may indicate that she is not yet Mrs. Stan Arvig.  She is the
daughter of Morris and Gertie Hansen - Gertie is Fred's sister.

Stan and Dorothy did a wonderful Ancestory Book for the
Oleson Family. Many of the pictures that I have been able to put
into my Ancestory sitecame from their work.

Thank you Stan and Dorothy!!

Carole Lynn and Jerry Oleson, Malcom's Children, Photographed by Glen, his brother.

Carol Lynn, age 5 and her younger brother: Jerry,
18 months.  Parents are Malcolm and Bernice
Oleson who lived in Seattle.  This picture
reportedly taken sometime in the 1940's.

Glen Oleson, Malcolm's brother, took the
picture of  the children.  The picture says that
Glen also "developed the picture."
It is a large, obviously custom
sized & backed photograph.

I believe that Fritz, Malcolm and Glen were
close brothers - they all lived in the Northwest
and must have hung out together.

Here you see the three brothers with Cora at
Fritz and Cora's house.  I have seen other pictures
with Glen and Malcolm with Fritz and
Cora's young children as well.

These Girls are Pals... can girls be pals?

They hung out at Mustard's together... then they hung out living in a Winery, then they went to Europe together, now I see them again... and probably not the first bottle of Luna that they have uncorked this week.

Charlotte is probably one of Carol's dearest friends.  I would say the same but I am not sure that I can be Charlotte's Pal.  I need to check the dictionary.
